C.A.R. President Jeanne Radsick Gives an Update on Support for Your Transactions and Providing Relief
March 26, 2020
First, I hope you and your loved ones are staying well.
I know that it’s difficult to conduct business right now, so I want to reassure you that C.A.R. is here to support you with your transactions and working diligently to provide you relief.
I want to inform you that in response to Gov. Newsom’s Stay at Home order issued last week, C.A.R. has urged the governor to have real estate classified as an essential service and to expand permissible activities for REALTORS® while maintaining the health and well-being of REALTORS® and their clients.
C.A.R. has also urged Congress to provide forgivable SBA loans to self-employed, independent contractors, such as REALTORS®, in the COVID-19 federal aid package, which just passed the Senate late last night. As REALTORS®, we know that independent contractors do not have access to the safety net of unemployment benefits afforded to millions during this crisis.
That’s why C.A.R. is requesting meaningful, long-term relief—so you can get back to serving your clients. You can also get information about REALTOR® Relief financial assistance programs available now.
In the meantime, REALTORS® who qualify as a small business can apply for low-interest federal disaster SBA loans. These loans provide working capital to small California businesses suffering substantial economic injury as a result of the coronavirus.
Additionally, C.A.R. is actively and aggressively pushing forward legislation to allow for online notary in California so that REALTORS® can continue to do business and serve their clients’ needs during this time. We’re also working with NAR to seek a federal solution that would allow the use of online notary services by California REALTORS®.
We’ve also asked that that the recording and other work of the County Recorders be allowed to continue, of course with safeguards for their employees during this ongoing crisis.
Lastly, last week, C.A.R. launched a new microsite devoted to keeping you up to date on the COVID-19 pandemic and providing you with vital tools and information while we’re in unchartered waters. Head to car.org/coronavirus and you will find a wealth of information, including news updates, frequently asked questions about transactions and legal issues, market impact, health and safety tips, best practices, and many other resources.
We will get through this time of uncertainty together if we continue to be empathetic and supportive of each other as I know the REALTOR® family is.
